Don’t automatically assume your prospect is going to have a negative perception of MLM and that you have to defend network marketing. It is best to ask questions in response to their questions so you learn, figure out, where they are coming from.

Is this one of those pyramid things?
• What do you mean by a pyramid? (find out their perceptions before responding)
• You mean like GM or Microsoft, where the only people that make money are the people at the top? No, this is nothing like that.
• Pyramids, or money game things are illegal… we are a legitimate company
• Yes it is! We’re gonna make a fortune! Are you in or out? :->)…

Is this one of those MLM things?
• What do you know about MLM? (again, find out what they are thinking)
• Do you have experience in MLM?
• Absolutely! That’s why I’m involved! How else can the average person make 50K a month working from home in their PJ’s?

Those don’t work. No one makes any money in those things…
• On what grounds do you make that comment? (what is their experience, if any)
• Are you an expert in business? Do you know more than Warren Buffet? More than Richard Branson? More than Robert Kiyosaki?
• It’s working for a lot of people… would you like to meet some of them? 3 ways!

Do I have to sell to my friends and family?
• Not if you don’t want to… but, if you had a product that did ______ don’t you think they’d want to know about it?
• If you see a good movie, do you tell your friends and family about it?
• Would you rather your friends, family suffered from ____ instead of telling them?

If people have a negative perception of MLM, it’s usually one or more of the following:
1) Front Loading – old line MLM companies focused on moving large blocks of inventory to the distributors… people filled their garages with soap or their basements with water filters. The money was made based on a few people (distributors) buying lots of product. NOT BASED on a viable product moving to an end line consumer.
2) Deception in the recruiting process – in the past many companies/distributors were deceptive in the process of inviting people to view an opportunity presentation. For example, invite people over for a dinner party etc and someone would do an opportunity presentation.
3) The “hype and rah rah”- only selling and promoting the business, product was secondary if even discussed or promoted at all
